PKP Intercity has received the first 8 of 81 new wagons manufactured by the Polish rail vehicle manufacturer H. Cegielski in Poznan. The remaining vehicles will strengthen the national carrier's fleet by the end of this year. The value of the entire contract is PLN 697 million.

Its implementation is part of the most significant investment program in the history of PKP Intercity. The carrier's fleet got also strengthened by the first two universal diesel locomotives of the new SU4220 series modernized with the participation of EU funds.

PKP Intercity presented the first carriage for the first time at last year's TRAKO trade fair in Gdańsk, and PKP Intercity will put these newly manufactured carriages into service soon. PKP Intercity will include the modern carriages in the InterCity (IC) and Express InterCity (EIC) trains, which will run on the carrier's busiest routes.

The new coaches will provide passengers with comfortable seats, air conditioning, a passenger information system, and closed-system toilets. Each seat will have access to an electrical outlet and individual lighting. In addition, the manufacturer will install mobile signal boosters and wireless internet facilities. The new carriages are fully compliant with the technical specifications for interoperability, allowing efficient and effective movement on the trans-European rail network. They will also be suitable for a speed of 200 km/h.

PKP Intercity has also received the first two upgraded universal diesel locomotives of the new SU4220 series, based on upgrades to the classic SM42 series diesel locomotives. The vehicles have two modern internal combustion engines that meet the Stage emission standard. The new solution with which the locomotives got equipped is a microprocessor control system, which improves the traction characteristics of the vehicles and at the same time enables a reduction in fuel consumption. The upgrade has increased the operational safety and reliability of the locomotives. By the end of this year, the Poznan-based manufacturer will deliver 13 of these locomotives.
