On July 8, 2018, one of the biggest train disasters ever occurred: a train traveling from Kapıkule on the Bulgarian border to Istanbul derailed, taking the lives of 25 people. The cause of the accident was bad weather conditions: heavy rains washed away the embankment on which the train tracks were laid.
At the time of the accident, there were 362 passengers and six crew members on the train. Five of the six cars derailed near the village of Sarılar. More than 100 ambulances and rescue helicopters arrived at the crash site. As a result of the tragic accident, 25 people died, and more than 70 got injured.
A few days ago, the Trains Facebook page published a video, which attracted the attention of many users. It captures not only the moment of the train derailment but also the first reaction of the engineers, who, despite the circumstances, remained calm and responded as quickly as possible. Some users argue that if the driver had used the emergency stopcock at least a second later, there would have been many more fatalities and injuries.
