Line 11 of the Madrid Metro is to receive solid funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for an extension worth EUR 372 million, exactly half the estimated cost of the entire 7 km underground line project with three new stations (Comillas, Madrid Rio, Palos de la Frontera) and the reconstruction of two existing stations (Atocha Renfe and Conde de Casal).

The Line 11 extension works will be carried out in stages and will help extend the connection between Madrid and the southwest to the northeast (between Cuatro Vientos and Valdebebas), as well as reach strategic mobility points, such as the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez airport and Madrid Puerta de Atocha station.

Line 11 is planned to become a diagonal line. It will be extended by 18.3 km between Cuatro Vientos and Conde de Casal, by 8 km of the central section between Conde de Casal and Mar del Cristal and north from Mar del Cristal to Valdebebas Norte by 7.2 km. In total, the line will receive a 33.5-kilometre extension and thus become the longest line of the Madrid Metro.

The extension of the Madrid metro line will encourage a shift away from cars and buses, which, in turn, will lead to lower pollution levels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improved air quality. The work on Line 11 is part of projects by the regional Ministry of Transport, which aims to promote in the Madrid community a mobility model based on environmental sustainability, as well as intermodality, high-capacity public transport and technological innovation.
