Shangri-La Express underwent a huge upgrade when it received a new fleet in 2017. The private Shangri-La Express (formerly the China Orient Express) isn't luxurious, but it's guaranteed to be the best way to see the fascinating country that China really is. It's the most modern hotel train in China and far surpasses regular train travel in every way.

Accommodation

The train has a maximum capacity of 110 passengers. However, it is expected to have between 80 and 100 passengers on board the Silk Road journey. Passengers booking Gold or Imperial Class for the Silk Road journey will be accommodated in a Diamond Class cabin on the Shangri-La Express.

Diamond Class Cabins

Diamond Class cabins are 7 square metres and feature a double bed, desk and chair, and a private toilet, sink and shower. Beds in Diamond Class cabins are 1.9 metres long and 1.5 metres wide.

Heritage class cabins

Heritage class cabins are just under 4 square metres and have two twin single beds with a small bedside table and a passageway between the beds. The twin beds measure 2 metres in length but vary in width between 60 and 75 centimetres. The size of the bed is then determined by the booking order. There are two toilets (one Chinese-style and one Western-style) in the Heritage Class cars, which are shared by all cabins and are located at either end of the car. There is also one communal shower in each Heritage Class carriage.

Each car has its own staff who clean the cabins, make the beds and are ready to serve tea or coffee any time of the day or night.

Catering

Cereals, fruit, eggs and toast are served in the dining car for breakfast, while Chinese chefs offer a variety of local dishes for lunch and dinner. In addition to meals, the ticket price includes soft drinks and beer or wine, which are served in unlimited quantities during lunch and dinner.
