Railways hold countless records, but some tracks stand above the rest. From China to Spain, explore the world’s longest train routes and their fascinating tales.

The Longest Train Route in the World: China to Spain

Although the Trans-Siberian Railway is widely regarded as the longest train route, there’s another connection that surpasses it. The freight route from Yiwu, China to Madrid, Spain covers an astounding 13,052 kilometers in just 21 days, crossing two continents.

Surprisingly, many people haven’t heard of this route since it’s reserved for freight transport rather than passengers. Despite its incredible length, this remains the cheapest option for moving goods across continents. It’s also faster than air or sea freight, making it a vital link in global trade. According to Global Times, back in November 2024, the route celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The Trans-Siberian Railway – Longest Passenger Route

The iconic Trans-Siberian Railway connects European Russia with Siberia. For travelers embarking on the journey from Moscow to Vladivostok, the train becomes a home for about a week. This is the longest passenger rail route in the world, spanning two continents and crossing eight time zones. Along the way, there are nearly 100 planned stops.

Historically, the railway played key roles:

  • It contributed to the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War.
  • During WWII, it was used by Germans to transport goods to Japan.
  • It also served as an escape route for Jewish refugees fleeing to the U.S.

Moscow to Beijing: The Trans-Manchurian Railway

Russia’s railway prowess doesn’t stop there. The Trans-Manchurian Railway offers several ways to journey from Moscow to China. According to Trans-Siberian Express, travelers can choose a route via Mongolia, but that requires a visa. For a seamless trip without extra paperwork, opt for the direct Moscow-Beijing train. This service operates twice a week, crossing seven time zones before arriving in China’s capital.

North America’s Longest Railway: Canada’s Cross-Country Marvel

North America’s longest railway spans Canada, connecting its two coasts. Known for its luxurious train, The Canadian, this route stretches 4,466 kilometers from one end of the country to the other. The construction of this railway was not without sacrifice. According to SlashGear, many workers, particularly Chinese laborers, lost their lives during its creation. Those who survived laid the foundation for Canada’s thriving Chinese community.

Chicago to Los Angeles: The Texas Eagle

For those wanting to journey from Chicago to sunny Los Angeles, the Texas Eagle offers a scenic ride. Operated three times a week, this train connects with the Sunset Limited at San Antonio, creating one of the world’s longest rail routes, as stated on the Amtrak website. A highlight of this journey is the two-story carriages equipped with observation decks, allowing passengers to enjoy breathtaking views of the passing landscapes.
