Lithuanian Kaunas, Serbian Novi Sad, and Luxembourgish Esch are connected not only by being the second largest cities of the respected countries but also by the fact that all of them were in the year 2022 declared as the European Capitals of Culture by the EU. Thanks to this each of these cities is going to attract a lot of attention from cultural events and activities. However, a trip to Kaunas by train is not possible. All international rail connections between Lithuania and its neighbors from the EU are on hold.
Last week a group of European activists engaged in railway issues published an open letter to key European and national officials, including Polish and Lithuanian ministers of transportation and culture. In this letter, the activists challenged the officials to resume the everyday connection between Kaunas and Poland.
