The Glacier Express is a fascinating symbol of the Swiss Alps and proudly holds the title of the slowest express train in the world. This unique train offers not only a leisurely ride but also unforgettable views of the picturesque landscape.

While being labeled the "slowest" might sound negative, the opposite is true. The Glacier Express is designed to allow passengers to fully enjoy the natural beauty Switzerland has to offer. It's known for its most scenic sections, like the Albula and Bernina lines, which have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These routes offer breathtaking views of mountain peaks, bridges, and tunnels.

The first official Glacier Express journey took place on June 25, 1930, when the train traveled from Zermatt to St. Moritz. The train consisted of elegant saloon and passenger cars of various classes. The route was operated by state-of-the-art electric locomotives, while steam locomotives were used on the still non-electrified Furka Oberalp Bahn (FOB) line.

The Slowest Express Train in the World

The 8-hour journey on the world's slowest express train covers 291 bridges and 91 tunnels. In the 1940s, electric operation was introduced on the Furka-Oberalp network, contributing to the further development of the Glacier Express. After World War II, express train service resumed, and the train retained its popularity thanks to advances in technology and modernized carriages. The addition of a dining car further enhanced its comfort and appeal.

In 1961, the Furka Oberalp Railway (FOB) became independent, and the Glacier Express only ran during the summer months. However, in 1982, after the completion of the Furka base tunnel, the train became a year-round service. Its unique connection to mountainous regions and year-round availability won the hearts of many travelers.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the Glacier Express evolved into a one-of-a-kind tourist product. Extensive investments in infrastructure, modern carriages, and exceptional dining services contributed to its popularity. Today, the train offers not only a comfortable ride but also a wide range of service packages for international travelers.

The Glacier Express stays true to its roots, combining traditional elements with modern comfort. It's not just a train; it's an experience. It's a journey that allows you to discover the beauty of the Swiss Alps in peace and comfort. Whether you're a passionate traveler or simply want to enjoy nature's beauty, the Glacier Express is the ideal choice for you.

Today, the Glacier Express carriages are equipped with large panoramic windows, allowing passengers to enjoy the views of the surrounding landscape without any obstructions. Some carriages even have glass roofs, offering views of the sky and mountain peaks. The Glacier Express also hosts special rides and events, such as New Year's celebrations, Christmas rides, and themed trips, which include special programs and dining experiences.
