Deutsche Bahn's Südostbayernbahn idea train was presented at the world's largest railway technology trade fair in Berlin, InnoTrans. But from March 2023, the visionary train will be coming to Bavaria.

Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, together with Evelyn Palla, Director of Regional Transport at Deutsche Bahn AG, and Thomas Prechtl, Managing Director of the Bavarian Railway Company, have already taken a look inside: "The idea train gives us a glimpse into the future of travel. The Free State has funded the development with around 1.5 million euros, and I am pleased that Bavaria's passengers will soon be able to experience the idea train in daily operation," he said.

The Ideenzug is a joint project of the Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft, the DB subsidiary Südostbayernbahn (SOB), and the design office Neomind, and was presented to the public for the first time at InnoTrans. Among many other special features, it combines four modules that are geared to the different needs of passengers: an office for working in peace, a regulars' table for cozy get-togethers, a family module for generous relaxation, and the New Sitting module with particularly ergonomic seating.

"I am very excited to see how the new ideas will be received by the passengers," says Bernreiter. "I myself was able to experience the train up close for the first time here at InnoTrans, and I am very impressed. I think all the modules are a success, but as a Lower Bavarian, I was particularly taken with the Stammtisch module. The idea train will be a very special experience for passengers in Bavaria." The idea train will run on one of the busiest local transport routes in Bavaria: between Mühldorf am Inn and Munich. It is scheduled to start daily service on March 3, 2023.

Evelyn Palla, Director of Regional Transport at Deutsche Bahn AG: "In the Südostbayernbahn idea train, our passengers in Bavaria will soon be the first to experience the regional transport of the future. Whether it's swivel chairs for more privacy or live information on the train's capacity on displays: we are providing more comfort and quality. In this way, we want to convince as many people as possible to switch from the car to climate-friendly local public transport - especially commuters in rural areas, who can organize their time on board individually."

"The Ideenzug project is a strong team effort involving the lifeblood of many partners. Behind it is a common vision: to achieve the transport turnaround, we have to convince passengers that rail is an attractive means of transport. To do this, we need innovative vehicles and new service concepts. The idea train is, in a way, our rolling test laboratory and will face the reality check from March next year," says Thomas Prechtl, spokesman for the management of Bavarian Railway Company.
