Silesia is on the verge of a railway revolution. The Czech railway authority has launched preparations for a new high-speed rail (HSR) section linking Ostrava to Poland.
The Czech railway authority (Správa železnic) continues its ambitious high-speed rail (HSR) development, with the latest focus on Silesia. Plans are now set in motion to connect Ostrava to the Polish border, extending further toward Katowice. A week before Christmas, the railway authority issued a public tender for a contractor to develop documentation for the HSR Silesia project.
Route and Key Infrastructure Plans
This new rail line will connect to the Moravská Brána high-speed corridor, which is designed to link Brno and Ostrava. At Dolní Lutyně, the new track will branch off from the existing railway corridor and extend to the Polish border, crossing it via an elevated viaduct over the Olše River. Additionally, the project will involve upgrading the existing railway infrastructure between Ostrava’s main station and Bohumín, further strengthening the region’s transport network.
Cooperation with Poland and International Connectivity
According to Správa železnic’s official statement, the project aims to revitalize railway transport in the region and enhance connections with neighboring Poland. The initiative is being developed in close collaboration with Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK), Poland’s state-owned railway developer responsible for expanding Poland’s high-speed rail network and its planned international airport.
The selected contractor will be responsible for preparing project feasibility studies, environmental impact assessment (EIA) documentation, and obtaining construction permits. Project planning is expected to begin in mid-2025.
