The traffic concept of Deutsche Bahn (DB) for the general renovation of the so-called Riedbahn between Frankfurt/Main and Mannheim has been finalized. Long-distance and goods trains will be rerouted during the work from July next year. For the regional and suburban trains running on the line, DB will set up a substitute bus service for the five months of construction work.
150 new intercity and articulated buses with a high standard of comfort will be used. On the routes via Worms and Mainz or Darmstadt, DB will also replace part of the train service with buses. The replacement services are organized by DB SEV GmbH. The timetable and route concept for a total of 15,000 passengers per day is being implemented by DB together with the public transport authorities and railway undertakings. Further details on this and the equipment of the buses will be presented separately by DB in the autumn.

During the general renovation of other highly congested sections of the rail network from 2025 onwards, regional transport will also be carried out by bus during the construction work. The necessary replacement transport services are to be put out to tender across Europe this autumn for several years. This involves a mileage of about 200 million kilometers. An agreement on the assumption of costs is being discussed between the federal government, DB Netz AG as an infrastructure operator, the public authorities, and the railway undertakings.
The Riedbahn is DB's pilot project on the way to a high-performance network. For more quality and punctuality in train traffic, DB is bundling all planned construction measures for the coming years on the approximately 70-kilometer-long line during the general renovation from 15 July 2024. In the record time of five months, infrastructure facilities such as tracks, switches, signals, and signal boxes, as well as the stations, will be renewed and modernized.

By 2030, DB wants to completely renovate 4,200 kilometers of track in the highly congested rail network. This means that the lines will be closed once. Afterward, no major construction work will be necessary for several years. In addition, the generally rehabilitated sections will be significantly more efficient than in their current condition, will receive a first-class standard of equipment, and will be equipped for the digital railway operation of the future. With the long-term planning of diversions and replacement services, DB is ensuring that passengers and goods will reliably reach their destinations even during the general renovations. DB is currently holding further talks with the federal government on the selection and sequence of the route sections.
