DB Fernverkehr's Head of Marketing, Stefanie Berk, highlights that environmentally friendly travel by train is part of the company's brand essence. Berk also notes that more holidaymakers are switching to rail travel, and the railway company has been able to convince even more environmentally conscious travellers with bikes of their offer.
The combination of bikes and trains is becoming more popular than ever before. In 2022, the number of bicycles transported on DB's long-distance services alone increased significantly to a record 570,000 bicycles. Compared to 2019, the number of bicycles transported in long-distance traffic grew by 45 per cent.
The demand for bicycle parking spaces on DB's long-distance trains rose by around twelve per cent in 2022 within Germany, and by more than 40 per cent on international long-distance services. To meet the increasing demand, DB is expanding its bike transport service. The new ICE 3neo with eight parking spaces per train will make it possible to take bicycles on high-speed services at speeds of up to 300 km/h from December 2022. The ICE L, which will enable passengers to board long-distance trains without steps, will be available from the autumn of 2024.
