photo: N World, EPA/Horrific Triple Train Collision in India with Nearly 300 Fatalities Reported
Two passenger trains and one freight train collided in the Indian state of Odisha, in the city of Balasore. At least 288 passengers have been killed, with about 900 people injured with varying degrees of severity.
According to preliminary information, the Shalimar-Coromandel fast train derailed at around 7 p.m. local time. Several cars ended up on the other track, which was being used by the Yeswanthpur-Howrah express train, and the train crashed into these cars, after which another collision occurred, this time with a freight train that was standing next to it on the tracks.
Rescuers, fifty ambulances, and several fire brigades are reportedly working at the crash site. It is noted that the death toll could rise as rescue teams continue to search.
