Alstom has successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of its hydrogen-powered solutions for long-distance travel. A Coradia iLint train, which was not modified, traveled 1,175 kilometers without the need to refuel its hydrogen tank. During the journey, the train only emitted water and produced minimal noise. The vehicle used in the project comes from the LNVG's (Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen) fleet and has been in regular passenger operation on the network of evb (Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser GmbH) since mid-August. Alstom partnered with the gas and engineering company Linde for the project.

Alstom CEO and Chairman of the Board, Henri Poupart-Lafarge, stated that the company is proud to lead innovation as the first railway manufacturer in the world to offer a passenger train based on hydrogen technology. He also highlighted that the successful journey provides further proof that hydrogen trains can replace diesel vehicles.

The journey began in Bremervörde and the Coradia iLint traveled across Germany, from Lower Saxony, where the train was built and developed, through Hesse to Bavaria, and all the way to Burghausen near the German-Austrian border before arriving in Munich. After the journey, the train will head to Berlin for several trips as part of InnoTrans 2022, the international trade fair for transport technology that will take place from September 20 to 23.

Sustainable mobility is receiving significant international attention. In addition to the LNVG contract for 14 Coradia iLint trains to operate in Lower Saxony, Alstom has been commissioned to supply 27 Coradia iLint trains for use in the Frankfurt metropolitan area. Furthermore, Alstom is building six Coradia Stream hydrogen trains in the Italian region of Lombardy, with an option agreed upon for eight more vehicles.
