Near the West German city of Cologne, a train crashed into a group of people believed to be railway workers. Two of them were killed on the spot.
Emergency services and police were deployed to the scene, and a helicopter was also flown in. According to a local police spokesman, the train was heading from Cologne to Koblenz. At around 11:00 local time, the train hit a group of workers on the track near the village of Fischenich, south of Hürth. Several people were injured and two were dead at the scene.

Five workers suffered shock, although they were not injured. Passengers on the train were also treated. In addition to the police force, ten ambulances and four emergency doctors, 35 fire brigades were deployed to the scene. The line between Hürth-Kalscheuren station and Brühl was closed.
