Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, ÖBB has transported around 250,000 displaced persons. With the Emergency Ticket Ukraine, people from Ukraine could use ÖBB trains and buses free of charge, even several times and throughout Austria. As already announced at the end of September, the Emergency Ticket Ukraine in this form will expire on 31 October.

Instead, the First Arrival Ukraine Ticket will be available from November. With this ticket, ÖBB guarantees that displaced persons from Ukraine arriving for the first time can continue to travel with their families to a safe place in Austria or a neighboring country.

Details of the First Arrival Ukraine Ticket:

  • This ticket is issued to persons with a Ukrainian passport who enter from the direction of Ukraine via the borders of Hungary, the Czech Republic, or Slovakia (via Breclav, Kittsee, Hegyeshalom, Marchegg).
  • The ticket is issued to first-time travelers by the train attendants of these trains to Vienna.
  • The ticket is valid for 24 hours from the time of issue for one journey to Austria or border stations in the direction of Germany, Switzerland, or Italy in 2nd class on ÖBB trains.
  • If a displaced person does not meet any train staff on the train or does not enter Austria by train, a one-time ticket issue exclusively takes place at the stations Vienna Central Station (at the "ÖBB Kund:innenservice.direkt" at the station entrance Sonnwendgasse) and Graz Central Station (at the ÖBB Reisezentrum).

New regulations analogous to other European railways

ÖBB is introducing this follow-up ticket analogous to other European railways on behalf of the Federal Government: "It was the order of the day for us to help the people as long as necessary. Since the beginning of the war, people have been fleeing from Ukraine and arriving here in Austria. We want to continue to ensure that these displaced persons can reach their place of refuge safely," assures ÖBB PV Executive Director Sabine Stock.

The new arrangement was also closely coordinated with the refugee coordinator in the Ministry of the Interior. "With the First Arrival Ukraine Ticket, a fair solution was found in the first step, which enables the displaced persons to travel safely. Given the high inflation and the tense financial developments in Austria and Europe, the decision in favor of this reduced variant is understandable and comprehensible," emphasizes refugee coordinator Andreas Achrainer.
