On October 26, Austria released a countrywide climate ticket for all public transportation across the country. Ticket is available to all citizens and allows them to use all scheduled services, such as public and private rail, city, and public transport.

Klimaticket works as a unified yearly pass for a specific area, regional, cross-regional, and nationwide. Austrian authorities say that it is more than just a ticket, the project aims to help reach the Paris climate goal together. The programme aims to increase the number of people using public transport services. Public transport is the climate-friendly alternative to motorized individual transport.

The annual pass is priced at 1095 EUR which works out at just 21 EUR a week or 3 EUR a day! There exist also a discounted version for students and the elderly.

Considerably low prices play important role in encouraging people to swap their cars for more climate-friendly forms of transportation. For example in neighbouring Germany, Deutsche Bahn offers an annual ticket only for railways for 4027 EUR.

Austrian mobility plan envisages an increase in public transport from 27 to 40 per cent by 2040.  KlimaTicket is being bolstered by many other measures such as modernization and expansion of major transport routes. The government programme has allocated billions in funds for further development. Austrian Rail lines (ÖBB) are planning to invest in the next six years EUR 17,5 Billion into the railways.
