On August 1, the Postbus Shuttle was launched in seven Upper Austrian communities in the Mondseeland region, providing 17,000 residents as well as vacationers and day visitors with a completely new mobility offer.
Mobility needs are changing, and people want to be more flexible and independent, but at the same time cost-effective and climate-friendly - whether in everyday life or on vacation. The idea of owning a car is becoming less and less crucial. The demand for demand-oriented services that supplement existing public transport in rural regions and at the same time create connections is increasing.

"The Postbus Shuttle is the clever new mobility solution for many routes, as inexpensive as a public bus and as individual as your car. Thus attractive for the population as well as for the vacation and day guests of the region", says ÖBB Postbus board member Alfred Loidl. "Travel safely, inexpensively and in a climate-friendly way through shared journeys by click. Just as uncomplicated as you can stream movies and music at any time or have food delivered, you can call up the Postbus Shuttle at any time."
"Rethinking mobility. It is the task facing our society in the coming years. With the Postbus Shuttle, the LEADER region of Fuschlsee-Mondseeland has positioned itself as a model region," explains Michaela Langer-Weninger, Regional Minister of the Upper Austrian Regions. She further emphasizes: "Once again, it shows: LEADER initiates in the small, large changes and creates quality of life locally."
Comfortably to the destination
The Postbus Shuttle provides public transport access where there is still no connection. The new mobility service successfully covers the first and last mile, linking non-pedestrian distances that would otherwise have to be covered by a car.
"Our goal is to make public mobility attractive for our citizens in rural areas and to create a climate-friendly alternative to owning a second car," says Elisabeth Höllwarth-Kaiser, mayor of Oberhofen am Irrsee and chairwoman of the LEADER region Fuschlsee-Mondseeland (FUMO) and the Mondseeland Regional Development Association (REGMO), which also hosts the Mondseeland Climate and Energy Model Region (KEM). Together, all these stakeholders got the project rolling in the region. "The shuttle, for example, ensures that our population can get home safely and comfortably, as it is called by a click as needed and brings passengers up to 300 m from their front door. Especially for our elderly society, who don't have the means or simply don't want to drive themselves anymore, the new on-demand service only brings benefits."

"In recent years, the demand for public travel has skyrocketed among both overnight and day guests and has reached a new peak this summer," adds Thomas Ebner, Managing Director of the Mondsee-Irrsee Tourist Board. "With the Postbus Shuttle, our guests now have the uncomplicated option of bridging the last mile of public travel to our host:in and excursion destinations away from the main traffic routes."
Simple, environmentally friendly and inexpensive with a welcome offer on the way
The Postbus Shuttle is booked by the passenger himself via an app, the Postbus Shuttle app. It is used via a dense network of stops with around 400 stops within a maximum walking distance of 300 meters. In addition, it is possible to book directly by phone with regional partners in the region, such as tourism businesses, doctors, service providers and restaurants.
The fare depends on the mileage and the number of passengers in the Postbus shuttle per trip - the more passengers, the cheaper the trip per person. As a special welcome offer, the Postbus Shuttle is half-price for the first three months for holders of a KlimaTicket. In addition, during the summer months, the Postbus Shuttle is on the road daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with extended operating hours.
Mondseeland: Seven municipalities enable new mobility for residents and guests of the region
Since 2016, the municipalities have been working intensively on the topic of the future of mobility in the cross-state LEADER region of Fuschlsee-Mondseeland (FUMO), as the region is experiencing a sharp increase in traffic and some of the rural communities have poor public accessibility. Today, the Covid 19 pandemic, the climate crisis and the Ukraine war increase the political pressure to act as never before.

Since 2016, the municipalities have been working intensively on the topic of the future of mobility in the cross-state LEADER region of Fuschlsee-Mondseeland (FUMO), as the region is experiencing a sharp increase in traffic and some of the rural communities have poor public accessibility. Today, the Covid 19 pandemic, the climate crisis and the Ukraine war are increasing the political pressure to act as never before. All the more pleasing that with 1.8.2022 the joint starting shot into new, area-wide mobility in the Mondseeland succeeded across municipalities. A strong network of supporters in the region (FUMO, REGMO/municipalities, KEM Mondseeland, TVB Mondsee-Irrsee, regional mobility experts) and broad approval from the population have made this possible. The Postbus Shuttle operation is provisionally planned for three years and financed by the seven Mondseeland communities. The federal and state governments are to be brought on board to ensure sustainable operation.

Postbus: mobility partner in rural areas
With its more than 2,400 buses, Postbus takes 131 million passengers to their destinations throughout Austria every year and also travels to places where there are no other public transport connections. The buses are on the road daily in around 1,800 communities, thus ensuring public connections in rural areas. As the largest bus company in Austria, Postbus is taking responsibility for future generations and will switch to climate-friendly drives in the long term. Postbus is the only bus company in Austria that has already implemented pilot projects in the field of e-mobility and hydrogen drive.
