Alstom and the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) have launched the first Coradia Stream regional train in Romania, beginning a new chapter in the country’s rail service.
The first new electric train in 30 years debuted between Bucharest and Brașov, kicking off the rollout of 37 Coradia Stream trains ordered by ARF to upgrade Romania’s rail system, as reported by Alstom.
Coradia Stream: A Step Towards Sustainable Mobility
The Coradia Stream trains have six-car sets with 351 seats, all designed with accessibility in mind. They feature a 100% low-floor design for easy boarding. Each car has two doors on the middle cars and one on each of the end cars to improve passenger flow. The trains also include four eco-friendly toilets, one designed specifically for passengers with reduced mobility.

Additional comfort features include spacious luggage racks, an advanced passenger information system with both sound and dynamic displays, and a digital passenger counting system. The system uses high-precision sensors to help operators plan and optimize train services based on real-time passenger data. The contract also covers 15 years of maintenance services for the fleet, with an option to extend for an additional 15 years, according to the company's press release. Alstom has invested EUR 50 million in a new maintenance depot located in Bucharest. The depot is equipped with the latest technology and specialized equipment, such as an underfloor wheel lathe and digital diagnostic tools. The initial phase of the facility was completed in April 2024, and a second phase is underway to fully equip the site for ongoing maintenance operations.
Introducing these trains is a milestone in Romania’s efforts to modernize its railway network. According to Gabriel Stanciu, Managing Director of Alstom Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova, "These 37 regional electric trains will significantly improve the quality of travel to major destinations like Brasov and Constanta and support the country’s transition towards more sustainable mobility." This delivery comes as Alstom celebrates its 30th anniversary in Romania, marking decades of contributions to the country's rail development.
Alstom’s Role in Romania’s Rail Development
Alstom has been active in Romania for 30 years, significantly supporting the country’s rail modernization efforts. The company has been involved in major signaling and electrification projects, such as those along the Rhine-Danube railway corridor and in Cluj Napoca, where it is part of the consortium building the city’s second metro system.
As RAILTARGET previously reported, last month Alstom delivered a Next Generation driving simulator to Metrorex, the operator of Bucharest's metro system, as part of its contract for Line 5. The simulator, installed at Valea Ialomitei station, uses Virtual Reality (VR) technology to replicate the infrastructure of the metro line, including tracks, stations, and signaling equipment. It also includes a full-scale replica of the Metropolis metro train cabin. This technology allows Metrorex instructors to train drivers and technicians in a controlled, realistic environment before the new trains begin passenger operations.
Coradia Stream: Designed for Europe
The Coradia Stream trains were designed by Alstom specifically for the European market, adhering to European standards and Technical Interoperability Specifications (TSIs). The trains are equipped with ERTMS Level 2 traffic control systems, allowing them to operate seamlessly across major European power systems. According to Alstom, over 700 Coradia Stream trains are currently used across Europe, in countries like Germany, Denmark, and Italy.
