Decades-old trams in Île-de-France are finally getting a modern replacement. Alstom’s cutting-edge Citadis TW20 promises a new era in urban transport.

Alstom has introduced its latest innovation—the new-generation Citadis tram—on the T1 line of the Île-de-France Mobilités network. This advanced tram, known as the TW20, is replacing some of the oldest models, which have served passengers since 1992.

The new Citadis tram is designed for passenger convenience and accessibility. The tram is 33 meters in length and 2.40 meters in width and accommodates up to 200 passengers, which is 15% more than the older models. It has six double doors on each side, including at the ends, to facilitate smoother boarding and alighting processes.

To ensure inclusivity, the trams are 100% accessible for passengers with reduced mobility. The pivoting bogie under the driver’s cab reduces gaps between the doors and platforms, further enhancing accessibility. Air-conditioning systems and a high-performance passenger information system with 20 strategically placed screens offer unparalleled comfort. Passengers can also charge their devices using 32 USB sockets throughout the tram.

Alstom Citadis' Eco-Friendly Innovations 

The TW20 sets new standards in energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. According to Alstom's press release, despite offering advanced features like air conditioning and dynamic passenger information, the tram’s energy consumption is reduced by at least 30% compared to previous models. This efficiency is achieved through a new-generation engine, optimized climate control systems, and 100% LED lighting.

The tram is also eco-designed, with a recyclability rate of up to 95% and recoverability of 99%. These features align with Alstom’s broader commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of its products.

For operators, the TW20 trams provide enhanced reliability and ease of maintenance. Advanced sensors embedded in the tram allow for real-time diagnostics, enabling proactive maintenance and reducing downtime, as Railway Supply reports. Other innovations, such as a reduced number of spare part references and improved component accessibility, make maintenance more efficient, ensuring optimum availability of the trams.

Citadis Trams: Driving Innovation in Île-de-France and Global Success

The deployment of the TW20 trams on the T1 line is part of Île-de-France Mobilités’ strategy to modernize its transportation network. These advancements aim to improve travel conditions for millions of passengers while supporting the region’s commitment to sustainability and technological innovationFrédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France, said, "The entry into service of the TW20 on the T1 line represents a major step forward for mobility in the Île-de-France region. The Citadis tram series has been a cornerstone of modern urban transportation worldwide. Alstom reports the sales of over 3,000 Citadis trams to 70 cities across 20 countries, including 25 cities in France. Since the first tram entered service in 2000, the Citadis series has covered over one billion kilometers and carried 10 billion passengers, proving its reliability and global appeal.
