The Tarnowskie Góry – Siewierz rail line will be 48 km long now thanks to the reconstruction that will allow easy access to Katowice airport and also let the passenger trains go up to 140 km/h.

The Tarnowskie Góry – Siewierz rail line is experiencing progress according to the original schedule to create the Katowice air-rail connection.

Polish rail infrastructure manager PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe is currently revitalizing the 30 km rail line that has been closed. The line is also going to be electrified and extended by 18 km to allow the connection to the airport. Passenger trains will be able to run at 140 km/h and freight trains at 80km/h.

Pyrzowice Lotnisko presents an important part in the investment as it is near the Katowice Airport, and has two platforms and an underpass for passengers to access the airport easily. The station is planned to have three new tracks.

Andrzej Bittel, Secretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure, stated that the investment was implemented under the National Railway Programme and would allow rail and air transport to be as effective as possible. Thanks to the new connection, the access to railways in the region will be increased.

The tracks are being laid by the contractor as the collision-free intersections along the section are being constructed.

“The implementation of the project will increase access to rail and its use in the agglomeration. The connection of the airport with the cities in the region will be significantly improved. The project is also important for the development of efficient freight transport,” Arnold Bresch, member of the Management Board of PKP PLK, commented.
