Düsseldorf public transport operator Rheinbahn has repainted one of its trams in the colors of Ukraine, placing a large inscription "Ukraine, we stand with you!"
The 28-meter-long vehicle also has hashtags that promote peace and humanity. The design was created by the Dusseldorf-based agency Piratas.
"For a month now, a terrible war that none of us thought could happen has been raging in Ukraine. The pictures and news, the unspeakable suffering coming at us daily since then, continue to overwhelm and upset us all," explains Klaus Klar, CEO and Director of Labor for Rheinbahn.
"Our thoughts are with this proud country and its honest people who have been forced to flee their homes or are now in the midst of this violent conflict. We want to send a sign against the war via this tram. And we want to show the refugees in our city that we support their homeland," adds Klar.
With the war outbreak in Ukraine, the Rheinbahn offered logistical support to Düsseldorf in caring for refugees. Since then, Rheinbahn buses have taken several thousand women, children, and men displaced from the war zone to their safe housing in Düsseldorf and other parts of North Rhine-Westphalia.
In addition, refugees can continue to use Rheinbahn vehicles free of charge.
