Barriers trapped a young passenger car driver at a level crossing in Trutnov, Czech Republic. When a fast train approached, the driver started to reverse and move around instead of trying to break through the barriers. He avoided the train at the last moment.
The incident took place on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 20, near the centre of Trutnov at the crossing on Polská Street.
"The car had a Polish licence plate. The driver was going in the direction of Poland, like me. He entered the crossing, the barriers went down, he did not get away and just tried to compare to one side," Monika Št'astná, who took a video recording of the whole situation, described it to iDNES.cz and posted it as a threat in the Trutnováci Facebook group.
No sooner had the young man managed to move his car than a Krakonoš express train headed for the Trutnov train station whizzed past him.
It is still under investigation whether or not the car entered the crossing when the warning lights were flashing. Police officers are currently evaluating the CCTV footage.
The whole situation has sparked a heated debate on social media. Some criticized the driver for not trying to break through the barriers, while others leaned on witnesses who documented the whole situation instead of helping the driver.
"Same thing last week and at the same crossing. It was a Pole. And we ran to raise the barrier for him, and I wouldn't do it again because at that moment a train came through and if the car had been swept away I would have been dead. I was more shocked than the driver, who immediately drove off," Simona Kynclová described her recent experience to iDNES.cz.
