There's a buzz of activity at the Perg railway station, but it's not just about the trains. High up on the ÖBB radio mast, a stork family has been busy growing, with four young birds who are now stretching their wings and attempting their first flights. After weeks of dutiful care, mom and dad stork are likely excited to see their young ones starting to stand on their own two feet, and, quite literally, spread their wings.
The first brave adventurer started its flight trials in early July. Its siblings, a bit more hesitant, are still working up their courage. With the parents bringing less food to the nest, it's a gentle nudge for the youngsters to go out, explore, and hunt for food on their own.

It's been quite a journey so far. In the early days, one parent would always stay close, ever watchful over the little ones. Two months in, the chicks are stronger, starting to fledge, but still relying on their parents for food for a few more weeks. By the time they hit two and a half months, they'll be independent storks. And by three months, they'll bid goodbye to their parents and go their own ways. Given that storks can live for over 20 years, this is just the start of their adventure.
