The UK government has published the first national hydrogen energy strategy to include widespread use of fuel cells in transport, including railways.

The document states that electrification is the best strategy for decarbonizing railways, however, on some lines, the use of traction batteries and hydrogen-fueled trains is justified.

Network Rail has identified 1,300 km of lines that will benefit from hydrogen-fueled trains to meet the government's goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The British Railroad Industry Association (RIA) has called on the government to purchase hydrogen trains. Currently, the country is implementing several projects for the creation of such trains.
