Due to its location in the northern Adriatic Sea, the port of Trieste represents a natural access to the sea for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The duration of the voyage is significantly shorter compared to the main competing ports in northern Europe, and the level of related transport infrastructures and services is also significantly improving. Trieste is currently the first Italian port in terms of freight and rail traffic, the first Mediterranean oil terminal and the eleventh largest European port.

"Last year, all the main indicators showed positive values despite the pandemic crisis," with a positive emphasis about the progress said Zeno D’Agostino, chairman of the Eastern Adriatic Port Authority - the port of Trieste. Last year, around 74 million tonnes of goods were transported through Trieste, comparing to the 2019 it is two percent more. The growth of rail transport is even stronger, growing by 45% in 2020. Last year, 9143 freight trains were dispatched from Trieste. "And this year we would like to reach ten thousand train units," said D’Agostino.

After the 2016 reform, the port authority has become more networked. "Today, we are investing in both port infrastructure and transhipment depots," added President D’Agostino. The port also benefits from favorable natural conditions, such as depth, which allow the mooring of large container ships and tankers, such as the MSC Palomy with a capacity of 14,000 TEU. Another important part under the administration of the port is the duty free zone. "And we will soon take control of the port of Monfalcone," D’Agostino said.

In the future, the port of Trieste sees itself as a hub where logistics intersects with high value-added production activities located in a duty-free zone. There are also plans to strengthen rail links with most Balkan and Central European countries. Continuous transport, direct connections will be further developed and, in connection with public transhipments, emphasis will also be placed on intermodality.
