The government of the German federal state of Bavaria supports the pilot operation of a hydrogen fuel train on the Bayerischen Regiobahn (BRB) railway network. A letter of intent was signed between the Bavarian Ministry of Economy and Transport and Siemens Mobility.

This pilot project is expected to last 30 months. The fuel cell train will be tested in the Augsburg-Füssen section and will be serviced in Augsburg. The two-car train, developed by Siemens Mobility based on the Mireo Plus H technology platform, is designed to travel on non-electrified lines and will have a range of 800 km without hydrogen charging. Two fuel cell modules will be placed on the roof, and new generation batteries produced by Saft will be placed under the car's body.

The train is expected to be shown to the public in the spring of 2022. In 2023, it will start test trips through Bavaria, and in January 2024, regular passenger services will be launched.
