Recently there have been several recent reports of the Canadian multinational's successful business moves. They are fulfilling orders for manufacturing and maintenance of high-speed trains for China, regional trains for France and producing metropolitan monorail units for Egypt.

16 new Chinese standard high-speed CR400AF train cars were ordered by China Railway Group from Bombardier Sifang (Qingdao), a Chinese subsidiary of Bombardier Transportation. Two trains will be delivered, each with eight cars. The trainsets should be produced by the end of 2021. The total value of the contract is to climb to EUR 38 million. The operating speed of the trains will be 350 km/hour.

China Railway Group has also entered into an agreement with Bombardier Sifang (Qingdao) to maintain 32 high-speed trains. The value of this contract is to reach up to 159 million euros and includes a fleet of 280 cars of the CRH1A-A, CRH1A, CRH1E and CRH380D series. The whole maintenance project is to be completed by the end of 2021. In previous years, Bombardier performed maintenance on about 1,200 high-speed vehicles. The French national railway operator SNCF placed orders to Bombardier Transportation for three more Omneo Regio 2N trainsets on behalf of Île-de-France Mobilités, and another 33 trainsets on behalf of the Hauts-de-France region. Those partial orders are parts of a large framework contract, which was signed by both companies in 2010. A total of 860 Omneo Regio 2N trains with single and double-level coaches are to be delivered to the French regions. Newly ordered trains should be gradually delivered from 2023 to 2025. After those deliveries, there will run 145 Bombardier trainsets around Paris and 77 trainsets between Amiens, Saint-Quentin, and Paris. “These trains entirely designed and manufactured at our Crespin site, in the Hauts-de-France region, have received the Origine France Garantie certification,” said Laurent Bouyer, President of Bombardier Transportation, France and Benelux.

Another success for Bombardier came from Egypt. Together with Orascom Construction and the Arab Contractors, Bombardier signed a deal to build Egypt’s first monorail in August 2019, and work on it is now underway. Two monorail lines are in the works, and the train producer is manufacturing the electric units for passenger public transport. Both lines should be up and running by 2023. Trains will be built at the Derby in Britain, and the project has gained GBP 1.7 billion in subsidies from UK export funding. Bombardier Transportation is taking care of the system and the trains, while a joint venture between Orascom and the Arab Contractors is implementing the civil engineering works. By winning this competition, Bombardier has also shown its competitiveness in Africa.
