According to information from the two giants in the railway business, ÖBB has ordered 20 additional night trains with seven wagons from Siemens Mobility to expand its Nightjet fleet. The trains are based on the Viaggio Next Level platform. A total of 33 next-generation ÖBB Nightjets will be commissioned by 2025, providing climate-friendly night connections between different European cities. The new trains will attract night passengers, offering more capacity, even more comfort, and more privacy.

In 2018, Siemens Mobility and ÖBB signed a framework agreement for the supply of day and night trains. Thirteen of the new generation Viaggio Next Level, called by this agreement, are currently being built at the Siemens Mobility plant in Vienna. The first trains delivered trains from this series will serve connections from Austria and Germany to Italy, starting in December 2022.

The second call from this agreement is already for 20 additional Nightjets. These trains are scheduled to serve from Vienna and Innsbruck to Hamburg and Amsterdam and to operate on routes from Vienna to Bregenz and Zurich. The connections from Graz to Zurich and from Zurich to Hamburg and Amsterdam will also be served by the new trains.

By 2025, 33 next-generation Nightjets will operate in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, replacing a large share of the current fleet.

Barrier-free travel with greater comfort and privacy

Each seven-car train consists of two carriages, three carriages, and two sleeping carriages. The state-of-the-art train design offers an even higher level of comfort. In the new car concept, additional minicabs provide significantly more privacy for single passengers and ensure a comfortable journey and a relaxed arrival. Traveling in the sleeping cars is even more convenient, as all compartments will have their own toilet and shower. The new trains will also have free WiFi service.

A smooth night journey will also be possible with the new Nightjets. Each Nightjet will include a multi-purpose car with a low-floor entrance, a barrier-free couch compartment, and a barrier-free toilet.
