Alstom has signed an approximately € 500 million contract with the Hamburg city rail (S-Bahn) for the supply of another 64 490 series three-car electric trains, which will be equipped with European Train Traffic Control System (ETCS) and ATO on-board devices at the plant.

The contract is based on a framework agreement signed in 2013. Eighty-two trains of the 490 series are already circulating on the Hamburg S-Bahn. The trains from the new batch are intended to serve the future lines S4, S32 and the extended line S21. They provide additional improvements in comparison with the operating rolling stock of this series, in particular, there will be another multifunctional area for prams and passengers in wheelchairs. The trains will be delivered in 2025 and 2026.

Hamburg is currently implementing a pilot digitalisation project for the city rail, developing and testing digital technologies that will be deployed across the city's entire S-Bahn network. In particular, the use of an automatic driving system operating on top of ETCS will significantly increase the throughput of existing lines. In addition, S-Bahn rolling stock is being equipped with intelligent obstacle detection sensors as part of the Sensors4Rail project.
