Alstom to equip the DB Cargo locomotives with the ETCS system

DB Cargo has ordered the installation of the ETCS system from Alstom, namely ETCS Baseline 3 Release 2. As part of the order, 13 locomotives are to be equipped with this system. They should run on the routes between Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.

As part of this order, the already installed Danish, and German national systems for communication with ETCS will be upgraded. The Swedish system will be integrated into the new ETCS hardware. The locomotives with an up-to-date system installed should return to operation at the end of 2022. Subsequently, other locomotives will be modernized in this way too.

Rail freight transport plays a crucial role in the mobility turnaround - this is where our digital solutions come into perfect play,” said Frederic Rybicki, the Managing Director of Alstom Digital Mobility Germany & Austria.

The equipment of the EG3100 series electric freight locomotives with the Alstom Atlas ETCS Baseline 3 Release 2 system complies with current European standards and trends. Thanks to these EU requirements, railway interoperability is ensured. Thus, trains can safely and reliably cross routes across state borders without disrupting the flow of railway traffic.

“By equipping our powerful EG 3100 series locomotives with ETCS equipment, we will also be able to offer climate-friendly, cross-border transport services for our customers in the future,” said Ralf Günter Kloß, Member of the Management Board for Production at DB Cargo.

The locomotives of the EG 3100 series have their roots in Eurosprinter locomotives, which were manufactured by Siemens for operation in Scandinavia. Specifically, they were designed for the conditions in the operation of the tunnel under the Great Belt. These locomotives use dual propulsion.
