As part of the Stuttgart railway hub digitalization project, Alstom is equipping 118 regional trains with European ETCS and automatic propulsion systems, in addition to the 215 S-Bahn trains in Stuttgart for which the contract was signed in June 2021.

Under a new contract worth approximately € 130 million, the first phase of implementation of ETCS and ATO trains with GoA2 automation level will be completed by the end of 2024 It`s also envisaged that these devices will be updated by 2027 to meet the requirements of the future European standard for TSIs on train traffic control and safety systems, which is expected to be adopted in 2022. In particular, for the first time in Germany, regional trains will be equipped with integrity monitoring devices, which will allow the transition to ETCS level 3 and will also be gradually equipped with devices for the future 5G compliant digital rail radio communication system FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System).

The customer is the SFBW department, which is responsible for the rolling stock provided to transport operators for regional communications services in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. In February 2021, as part of the digitalization project at the Stuttgart junction, a contract was signed with Thales for the supply of microprocessor locking systems, stationary ETCS level 2 equipment, and automatic control, as well as an automated control system for CTMS train traffic.

During the implementation of the contract, Alstom will actively cooperate with SFBW on the development of requirements for train integrity monitoring system, the transmission of train status data to the CTMS system, gradual transition to the FRMCS system, and implementation of standardized interfaces for - on-board control and safety devices in accordance with the OCORA reference architecture.
