BUDIMEX, a Polish giant in construction and infrastructure, is preparing to join the “project of the century” – the modernization of the Czech railway infrastructure. Rafał Zahuta, Regional Director of BUDIMEX for the Czech Republic, answers questions from RAILTARGET.
The Polish construction company BUDIMEX has decades of experience and has completed key projects that have transformed infrastructure not only in Poland but also in neighboring countries. Now, BUDIMEX is increasingly focusing on expanding into the Czech Republic, where it sees an opportunity to bring its expertise and knowledge into the transportation infrastructure sector, from highways to railways, as RAILTARGET previously reported.
Rafał Zahuta, Regional Director of BUDIMEX for the Czech Republic, shared his experiences and visions concerning the development of transportation infrastructure in Central Europe. As part of a press trip for media, journalists had the opportunity to visit some of BUDIMEX’s most significant projects, including the bypass of the Tri-City metropolitan area, the reconstruction of Gdynia Port railway station, and the construction of Terminal 3 at the Baltic Hub (formerly DCT Gdańsk).

This is what Czech highways could look like. Polish construction giant Budimex is wrapping up a major highway project near the Tricity area. Here’s…
RAILTARGET: Of these major projects that we had the chance to visit, is there one you are most personally proud of? What makes it unique?
Rafał Zahuta:
- It’s very difficult to compare these projects, especially since they are entirely different transportation projects. However, each of these investments is extremely important for the development of Polish infrastructure and, from various perspectives, unique.
- The implementation of the Tri-City bypass is a huge challenge as the work is taking place in a densely developed area, interwoven with both road and railway infrastructure, as well as engineering networks. However, we are well aware of how important this project is for the entire region, and we are committed to completing it to the highest standards and on time.
- The construction of the deep-water terminal T3 at the Baltic Hub port is an exceptional project for several reasons. Once completed, it will become the largest container terminal in Poland and the only deep-water port in the Baltic Sea region. The new terminal will allow the largest container ships to dock and establish direct connections with Asia. Additionally, it will expand Polish territory by more than 36 hectares.
- The modernization of the Gdynia Port railway hub is also special for BUDIMEX as it represents the company’s largest completed railway project to date. Thanks to this project, the capacity of the station was increased by five times. The port will now be able to handle freight trains up to 750 meters long, significantly boosting the capacity and efficiency of logistics services.

RAILTARGET: BUDIMEX is already showing significant activity in the Czech Republic. How do you assess the current situation in the Czech infrastructure market, and what role do you see BUDIMEX playing in its development?
Rafał Zahuta:
- Several stable players have been operating in the Czech infrastructure market for a long time. For us, as a relatively new player in the local market, succeeding in this environment is a challenge. However, from our perspective, we are doing very well so far. BUDIMEX’s entry into the local market means increased competition, which results in better prices for the Czech Republic in terms of infrastructure projects.
- We evaluate our presence in the Czech Republic very positively. We have successfully built a strong, stable team made up of both Polish and Czech experts. We have also been able to develop excellent relationships with local suppliers and other partners. Additionally, we have successfully secured two contracts, which we highly value.
RAILTARGET: Based on your experience, are there any Polish projects that the Czech Republic could draw inspiration from when planning high-speed rail? What role would BUDIMEX like to play in this?
Rafał Zahuta:
- Our ambition is to participate in the construction of high-speed rail networks in both Poland and the Czech Republic. Currently, projects in Poland are closer to realization. However, real-world experience in building high-speed rail lines is something BUDIMEX is currently gaining in Latvia. In a consortium with French and Italian partners, we are involved in building 230 kilometers of high-speed rail lines. The total investment for this project is approximately EUR 3.7 billion.
