PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. recently attended a Rail Forum Europe event at the European Parliament in Brussels, discussing the resilience of railway infrastructure amid crises and climate change.

The gathering, hosted by MEP Bogdan Rzonczy and jointly organized by the Polish railway representation in Belgium and PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., was held on May 24th and underscored the role of railways as a strategic transport medium, especially during times of crisis.

The Deputy Infrastructure Minister, Andrzej Bittel, highlighted the strategic significance of railways during his speech, stating, "In moments of crisis, they become, in principle, the only reliable means of transport." The primary address was delivered by Ireneusz Merchel, President of the Management Board of PKP Polskie Linii Kolejowe S.A. He focused on the resilience of railway infrastructure and the effects of climate change on the Polish railway network. He emphasized the rapid response of the Polish infrastructure manager in support of Ukraine amid the conflict, citing the swift measures taken to bolster border infrastructure, including reviving out-of-service railway lines, for EUR 37 million in 2022.

The forum also brought to the fore Poland's strategic role in transport corridors, with discussions circling around the development of the Trans-European Transport Network, including potential corridor extensions to Ukraine and Moldova and the proposition of a new Baltic Sea-Black Sea-Aegean Sea corridor. President Merchel underscored the need for sufficient funding to ensure the railway's growth and fulfilment of its role. The participation of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. in this meeting was part of their ongoing international activities focused on railway development.
