Polish carrier PKP Intercity deservedly celebrates Earth Day, with the leading theme being "Invest in our planet. According to data published on the official PKP Intercity page on LinkedIn, in 2021, the company has made an invaluable contribution to the environmental safety of our planet, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 628,000 tons!
It's no news that transportation produces ¼ of all carbon dioxide emissions in Europe. The vast majority, 71%, comes from road transport, including cars and trucks. Aviation and maritime transport produce 13% and 14% of carbon dioxide, respectively. Among all "polluters," railroads are in last place (only 0.4% of greenhouse gas emissions) due to the railroads’ electrification growing trend.
Users also agree with the official data, 86% of whom perceive rail as the most environmentally-friendly form of public transport. In addition, 51 per cent of PKP Intercity passengers believe that environmental issues influence which mode of transportation they choose. Rail transport also means travel security. For example, in 2020, there were almost 60 times more accidents on road transport in Poland than on rail.
