On Saturday, 21 May, the modern and interactive Railway Museum opened its doors in the passenger palace of Vilnius railway station. It will welcome visitors five days a week, presenting various spaces divided into stations and platforms with the main theme - A Colorful Journey!
The 700-square-meter museum will present to visitors the gems of railway history and even allow them to open the wings of a train depot and try their hand at being a train driver!
The Railway Museum is located on the second floor of Vilnius railway station and has three halls: information (exhibitions), cultural (exhibitions and events), and educational (models). It is an open, interactive, and modern space with an updated audio guide that allows everyone to take part in train simulators, railroad holograms, augmented reality, and, of course, numerous educational activities.
The museum renovations took about 2.5 years. In total, around EUR 800 000 has been invested in the renovation and modernization of the museum. Around EUR 565,000 of the investment was funded by the European Union. The rest was provided by Lietuvos geležinkeliai.

"Every day, while we are committed to environmentally friendly journeys for our citizens, we also see the importance of introducing them to the history and railways' everyday life. The smooth running of trains is ensured by many processes and technologies that have evolved and improved over the years. We invite you to get acquainted with the changes that have taken place and are still taking place in the Railway Museum. I am sure that everyone will discover and love railways, one of the cleanest modes of transport, in a new way," says Egidijus Lazauskas, Director General of Lithuanian Railways.
"The Railway Museum is open to everyone - the youngest visitors and railway enthusiasts will find fun and entertainment here. The museum team has prepared four programs for visitors of all ages. The oldest exhibits of the museum, which are more than 100 years old, have been integrated into the modern museum space and can be explored through modern media. They also allow visitors to travel back in time, reflect and dream about what train travel will look like in the future."

A brief historical context
The Railway Museum was founded in 1966 as part of the Railway Workers' Hall of Fame founded by the Vilnius District Board of Baltic Railway. In 1979 the museum was awarded the title of the People's Museum, and in 1985 it was named after Georgius Žemaitis, its founder and long-time director. In 1998, the museum moved to the address at Mindaugo st. No. 12/14., and since then, it has been constantly expanding.
Today the museum exposition is represented by about 900 exhibits, arranged according to the historical periods of railroad development and certain themes (e.g., travel, communications, road construction, rolling stock, railway signaling, builders, and workers).
