The twelfth edition of the International Railway Summit has been held in the beautiful city of Rome, Italy, from the 21st to the 23rd of February 2023. It is a significant gathering that brings together some of the most influential buyers and technical experts from the railway industry worldwide, providing an opportunity for industry leaders to share their insights and perspectives on key issues in the sector.

During the event, Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, presented his vision for transportation infrastructure in a keynote speech titled 'Investing in the Future: Rail at the Heart of Sustainable Mobility'.

A panel on 'Disruptive technology - is transformative change for rail going fast enough?' was also held, discussing Digital Automatic Coupling, AI, and low- and zero-carbon energy, featuring speakers from Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Hitachi Rail, Alstom, DACcelerate, Wabtec, EU Transport, and PwC.

Luigi Ferraris, CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, delivered his keynote speech on 'Making Rail the Backbone of Seamless Door-to-Door Transport', sharing insights into how various transportation modes can collaborate to create a truly sustainable, multimodal mobility system.

Additionally, Omoki Kuboshima, Assistant Manager Corporate Planning Department at Japanese JR East, led an informative session on initiatives leading to the realization of a decarbonized society.

Waqaas Rehman, Business Development Lead at InstaDeep, gave an insightful presentation on 'AI-Powered Capacity and Traffic Management System'.

Sabine Stock, Executive Board Member of ÖBB, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, CEO, Passenger Company at Ukrainian Railways, and Simon Fletcher, Former Director Europe, UIC had an engaging discussion on 'What is the Role of the Railway Community in a Humanitarian Crisis and Reconstruction?' at the International Railway Summit 2023.

Another session discussed technologies and strategies that transport can employ to make travelling by rail and negotiating multimodal connections as easy as possible, featuring speakers from Good Maps, BVG, UIC, Devox, and Deputy Mayor for Mobility, Rome.

Finally, a session was held to discuss the vulnerability of major public transport systems that handle large amounts of public and company data to cyberattacks. Astrid Courtay from Irdeto and speakers from DNV Group discussed this issue and possible solutions for cyberattacks in a session titled 'Is Rail Cybersecurity the Need of the Hour?'.
