The jury for the European Railway Award consists of railway and rail industry CEOs, EU-level political decision-makers, past winners, and selected journalists. They consider the nominees and select a winner through a vote.
Bane NOR SF, formerly known as Jernbaneinfrastrukturforetaket (Railway Infrastructure Company) is a Norwegian state agency responsible for the Norwegian railway network. Bane NOR became operational on January 1st, 2017, and already a few years later wins a European Railway Award in 2022 for their ERTMS program which is revolutionizing the Norwegian rail network and provides a vision for digital railways in a Single European Rail Area. The announcement was made on February 8th, 2022, in a live broadcast from Brussels.
Another winner was Manfred Weber, the Chairman of the European Parliament’s EPP Group, who got the European Railway Award’s Rail Champion prize for his dedication to promoting rail transportation among young Europeans. He gave huge support to the DiscoverEU program, which allowed many young people to travel around and get to know our continent in a sustainable manner, by rail.
During the ceremony, Manfred Weber also said a few words: “Rail travel is an essential part of our daily lives. Not only that, it can also be a life-changing experience to discover the beauty and diversity of Europe from a train. That is why I am so proud that we greatly increased the access to interrail for young people in Europe. We are grateful to all the people and organisations that have supported this idea, and we look forward to continue expanding this program in the future!”
