Continuing with the series of discussions from the VPI symposium in Hamburg, today, RAILTARGET presents you with an exclusive interview with Gilles Peterhans, Secretary General at UIP – International Union of Wagon Keepers. What can we expect from the European railway sector in 2023, and how the changes in Ukraine will benefit rail transport in Europe?

We are currently at the VPI symposium in Hamburg. In your presentation, you mentioned the topic of Europe and other countries. What do you think we can expect in 2023?

In 2023, I think we will have a lot of activities at the European level on greening freight, which should be beneficial to all European countries and our business. I think rail freight will be a big topic at the European level in 2023.

The big topic is the changes in Ukraine. There is talk of a European break in the tracks and new terminals. Do you think this is an opportunity for rail transport?

I am sure it's an opportunity. We've seen it now as we have moved a lot of grains by rail from Ukraine, and I think we are developing a new collaboration and discovering new customers in Ukraine. Ukraine has been very well known for manufacturing axles, wheelsets, etc, so it was already a trade partner, and now, if we can develop a common infrastructure via the new TEN-T regulations, that would offer even more possibilities for the business to develop, both for Ukraine and Europe.

Could you briefly outline what steps UIP is planning for the current year and what events you will be attending?

To make it very short and easy, our topic for 2023 will be the Digital Automatic Coupler, you've heard it today. I think we should develop a real political message and we need to sell the project to the politicians. They need to understand why they should support us. And then to get a little bit of funding or, at least, to see how we can fund the project. For us, that's the main issue for this year. And then, as for the events, I will be in different countries. I should be in the Czech Republic at the end of April because our Czech association will celebrate its 30th anniversary. And then, in June, we will have our General Assembly and Keepers' Summit, which we had in Vienna last year, which will take place on the 15-16 of June in Nice.
