The separation of superstructures from subframes and the use of a modifiable platform m² open freight cars for a variety of applications. This modular design makes logistics more flexible in general, and also improves the usability of rolling stock and its capacity throughout its entire life cycle.

Modular solutions make rail transport an integral part of the supply chain.”

The new transport concept “Modular Solutions” gives VTG a business model that is sustainable, flexible, and strictly customer oriented. “Our challenge is to completely rethink the freight car, including all our services and business models,” explains Torben Jaeger, head of VTG Europe Solutions. “Most rail freight cars are built and licensed for one specific purpose. But with the market becoming more dynamic, this is not always what you want. We no longer think about wagons and goods, but about solutions. " The ability to individually combine modular superstructures with all commercially available intermodal wagons naturally maximizes the potential applications. But it also means that assets can be available more quickly. For example, wagons, which are usually only used seasonally, should no longer be idle in the depot for the rest of the year. In addition, modular wagons also make repair processes more efficient: if a container is out of order, it is no longer necessary to send the entire wagon to the workshop, as the undamaged container can simply be placed on the existing platform. The same principle applies if the car itself is defective: here, too, the container can be moved to another car, and the customer can be transported continuously. In this way, downtime can be reduced altogether. The car concept, developed jointly by VTG and DB Cargo, goes even further: “The m² platform gives us modular subframes that allow us to adjust carriages of any length,” says Dr. Hanno Schell, VTG Technical Innovation Manager. AG. The main goal is to maximize flexibility. And thanks to the modular design, the platform can be adapted repeatedly to changing conditions and requirements: the length, bogie and brake configuration can be selected and changed individually according to specific needs.

These customized modular solutions are already available for a wide range of industries. Customers can choose the platforms and superstructures they prefer for all types of cargo, from steel products to timber and bulk cargo. There is also an extensive range of tank containers awaiting the transport of liquid and gaseous products.
