Ukraine's state-owned carrier Ukrzaliznytsia on 1 December 2021, posted a warning on its website that it got forced to inflict temporary restrictions on the carriage of transit goods through the territory of Ukraine.
The official reason for the ban is related to the active modernization of the ongoing infrastructural work related to the electrification of the section Kovel - Izov - state border section, and modernization of the Znamyanka - Zdolbuniv section. According to the published report, the active modernization of the railway infrastructure towards Poland caused the capacity to decrease to 350 wagons per day, and these volumes are not enough to ensure favorable transport. Therefore, it got decided to temporarily ban transit rail transport that runs through the Ukrainian territory.
Other unofficial sources say that the ban got linked to the lack of rolling stock for transporting thermal coal in Ukraine, which is now in popular demand in the energy sector.
A date for the resumption of rail freight did not get announced yet. Passenger rail services between the countries will run uninterrupted.
