In response to the global food crisis provoked by Russia, Europe, together with Ukraine, has created the Solidarity Lanes aimed at exporting Ukrainian grain and preventing the threat of hunger in the world. It was stated by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in her message and video message published on her Twitter page.
The Solidarity Lanes allowed to supply food for the world and provide profit for Ukraine. Today, we have invested €1 billion (co-financed by the EU, the EIB, the EBRD, and the World Bank - ed. The European Commission is joining efforts with the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Moldova, the EIB, the EBRD, and the World Bank," the President of the European Commission said in a statement.

According to Ursula von der Leyen, thanks to the Solidarity Lanes, Ukraine continues to trade with the world despite Russia's numerous attempts to besiege the country. In total, the European Commission has invested an additional 250 billion euros into improving these routes.
"We created emergency corridors to bring wheat, maize, and oilseeds out of Ukraine to global food markets. Thanks to our Solidarity Lanes, Ukraine has exported more than 15 million tons of agricultural goods. This is roughly 60 percent of all Ukrainian food exports since the war started," von der Leyen said.
She reminded that the European Solidarity Lanes, together with the UN efforts to unblock the Black Sea ports of Ukraine, allowed to stabilize world food prices, as well as to provide immediate assistance to the countries that needed it most. The corridors also allowed Ukraine to receive funds in the amount of about 15 billion euros. In addition, such efforts contributed to the further integration of Ukraine and its economy into the European Union.

"Where Russia sowed destruction, Europe restored hope. But Solidarity Lanes are now reaching their capacity limits and need urgent investments. Ukrainian railways and roads need repair. Waiting times at border crossings must be reduced. Border countries, including Moldova, that have become Ukraine's gateway to the world, need more support. And this is why we will boos the Solidarity Lanes with 250 million euros of additional investment, in the short-term, and, of course, we will further improve connections between Ukraine, Moldova, and the rest of Europe in the medium term," the President of the European Commission stressed.
In addition to the fact that after the outbreak of the war in February 2022, Ukraine was forced to stop exporting agricultural products due to Russia's blockade of the Black Sea ports, the occupiers began to steal Ukrainian grain in the temporarily occupied territories and deliberately destroy Ukrainian granaries with products prepared for export. As a result, the Solidarity Lanes were established as an alternative route for Ukrainian agricultural exports, which, in turn, averted the threat of famine, especially for the most vulnerable countries in the world.
