The world's oldest logistics company, Gebrüder Weiss, is opening a new office in Mersin, the third in Turkey, explaining the huge export potential of the port city and Turkey's important role in the Silk Road.
Gebrüder Weiss, which already has two offices in Istanbul and Izmir, has been operating in Turkey since 2012, organizing air, sea and partial cargo shipments. In 2021, the company expanded its transportation services from Istanbul to Germany by acquiring the forwarding company 3S Transport & Logistik.
"Choosing Mersin was all about expanding our network in the south of Turkey and the country's second-largest port, which includes air and sea freight services and intermodal land transport," said Gebrüder Weiss.
Mersin's location makes it an ideal export point for Europe and the East. The city is near Turkey's important manufacturing facilities for agricultural products, machinery, textiles and chemicals. A key argument for the company's operations expanding in Mersin is that the country is an important cargo handling point between Europe and Asia and the gateway to the Middle Corridor. It allows for the launch of inter- and multimodal transportation on the North-South axis through the Caucasus, Central Asia and China. "We have our own locations in most countries along the Middle Corridor and are familiar with the local legal and cultural particulars in these regions. We are also seeing increased demand from our customers for shipments on this route," concluded Gebrüder Weiss.
