From 11 January 2021, a new regular rail connection will be available between the Bettembourg-Dudelange intermodal terminal in Luxembourg and the RTM terminal at the port of Rostock on the Baltic Sea. Stena Line, LKW WALTER, Rostock Port and CFL multimodal are launching this new transport option.
Alongside this activity the above-mentioned companies have concluded a mutual partnership agreement to expand services. Their business strategy is based on the fact that this intermodal transport is another step towards building a European global combined transport network. In addition, the intermodal port in Luxembourg is a connection to existing railway corridors (Lyon, Le Boulou). The port of Rostock is again in a strategic position for ferries to Trelleborg, Sweden.
“As a Ferry and RoRo-Hub with connections to many Baltic Sea destinations, Rostock Port expands its hinterland not only to the BeNeLux countries but via connecting trains also to France, Spain and Great Britain respectively. We believe in the huge growth potential of this intermodal train for different kinds of cargo and thank to CFL multimodal, Stena Line and LKW Walter for their great efforts,” says Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of Rostock Port.
Thanks to this new intermodal connection, climatic conditions will also be improved. The amount of CO2 emitted will decrease by 18.000 tons every year.
“We have seen a strong demand among our customers for a regular intermodal service to and from the southern part of Western Europe including France and Spain to and from Scandinavia. We see great potential in both directions with industry products such as wood, paper and steel from the north and fresh food, fruit and vegetables and consumer products from the south,” says Fredrik Johansson, Shipping Logistics Sales & Business Development Manager at Stena Line Group.
Intermodal freight transport is currently trending phenomenon. A lot of new lines were started this year. It is both a more economical solution for clients and much more environmentally friendly solution for the planet.
