Last weekend, the largest humanitarian transport ever sent to Ukraine took to the railways. More than 120 wagons, including 1,500 tonnes of food, arrived in Kharkiv and Zaporizhia. The transport was organized by the Office of the Polish Government and the Government Strategic Reserves Agency.
"This is a huge transport with concrete, crucial humanitarian aid. It is 1,500 tonnes of food intended for Ukraine - in this case, for the residents of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. We sent, among other things, various ready meals, canned food, pasta, butter, sugar, powdered milk," said Minister Michał Dworczyk, who oversees the agency's activities.
According to Michal Kuczmierowski, president of the Strategic Reserve Agency, 73 trains have gone to Ukraine since 24 February, with support from Poland and other European countries. They are sending mainly medicines and food, which are humanitarian aid priorities in many places, but also medical and hygiene supplies, tents, beds, and blankets. Ambulances, fire trucks, generators, transformers, and satellite internet sets are also being sent. Michal Kuczmierowski said that rail is currently the most efficient way of delivering humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
