East-West Intermodal Logistics plans to build the largest and most modern intermodal combined terminal in Europe, the East-West Gate (EWG). The terminal should be built in Fényeslitke, Hungary, near the border with Ukraine and should be completed in January 2022. At that moment, the capacity of the EWG should be 300-500 thousand TEU per year, total theoretical capacity is 1 million TEU per year.
The construction should reach a value of EUR 61 million, and it is mainly financed from private sources. The Hungarian government provided a grant of EUR 8.2 million to the project to support the creation of new jobs in the border region.
The EWG will have a strategic position in the delivery of goods between Europe and Asia. It is already considered the gateway to the New Silk Road. It will offer customers a new alternative and faster route from Asia to Europe. Specifically, to Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Germany. The construction of the terminal will take place at the intersection of Russian wide gauge and European gauge railways. This will allow better use of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
The area of the EWG should reach 125 hectares. Customers will have 15 thousand square meters of storage space, which they would be able to rent. If this is not enough, it is possible to build additional storage space or even an assembly plant on the undeveloped area of 500,000 square meters, etc.
There will be 5 wide-gauge and 5 narrow-gauge tracks in the area. Besides, the terminal will offer a number of additional services. The terminal will have a crane track with a length of 850 meters. Thanks to this, it will be possible to operate 4 trains 750 meters long at the same time. The cranes will have a tonnage of 45 tons and will be ATEX and ADR certified. Thanks to this, it will be possible to transfer dangerous goods, such as containers with gas tanks and chemicals.
The EWG will also be the first European terminal to use green technology. A not only this. For example, it will use its own internal 5G network for internal communications. Additional energy will be provided by heat pumps and solar panels. Everything will be in line with the European Union's emission reduction targets. The internal traffic will be operated by electric vehicles.
