Russian Railways (RZD) continues to develop intermodal transport and offers carriers competitive services on the European section of the Silk Road. To this end, the company inaugurated a new East-West transport and logistics centre in the Kaliningrad region at the beginning of October. It is estimated that the capacity of the complex has an apartment of 450 thousand TEU containers per year.
"Today we are opening a new point on the logistics map of the country. The Kaliningrad direction is one of the most promising in terms of freight transport. In the last 3 years only, the volume of container transit through Kaliningrad region has increased seven times. The creation of a new terminal opens up additional opportunities for increasing this traffic and exploiting the transit potential of our country, " said Oleg Belozerov, CEO of RZD.
The terminal is built at Chernyakhovsk station in Kaliningrad region. The logistics center is focused on export and import transport as well as the handling of transit containers moving between Asia and Europe.
It is here that containers will be transferred from Russian wide-gauge rail (1520 mm) to European (1435 mm) and then shipped to their destination.
Management believes that in the future the East-West terminal can become one of the key transport and logistics hubs on the New Silk Road. The proximity of the complex to the border crossing Zheleznodorozhny (Russia) - Skandava (Poland) also helps. The terminal would make it possible to increase traffic in conditions where other border crossing points, in particular Belarus-Poland, have reached their capacity limit.
