The Rohrdorfer Group is using Rail Cargo Group’s new RockTainer SAND wagon to transport limestone from the Ebensee quarry to the Gmunden cement plant. RCG developed these special transport wagons in collaboration with the Rohrdorfer Group and Innofreight, with the aim of enabling more cargo to be transported in fewer trips. The 20 new InnoWaggons with 40 RockTainer SAND containers have been being used on the Ebensee-Gmunden route since May. In total, about 450,000 tonnes of limestone are being carried in this way in each transport period. The use of environmentally friendly rail and innovative wagon equipment translates into a saving of 36,000 truck journeys every year.

Optimising raw material supplies for the Hatschek cement works

Significant features of the newly developed equipment are a greater load capacity and highly efficient unloading technology. The RockTainer SAND now allows 804 tonnes of raw materials to be transported per train, up from 630 tonnes previously. Each InnoWaggon can carry a maximum of 134 tonnes. This saves a total of 160 train journeys every year. As part of the new design, the wagons are fitted with carbon brake pads, which means that the trains run particularly quietly and have a long service life. Unloading is quiet, too, thanks to the design of the flaps.

New hybrid locomotives from Stern & Hafferl

The RockTainer SAND containers are transported on new hybrid locomotives from Stern & Hafferl Verkehr. The so-called “Vectron Dual Mode” not only reduces maintenance and energy costs by 53% by using overhead lines, but it also saves several tonnes of CO2 compared with the previously used diesel locomotives, in that diesel use can be cut by about 80 %. The Vectron Dual Mode also saves time when shunting, by enabling rapid changes of traction between electric and diesel operation.
