LINZ AG, a company offering services in energy, telecommunications, transport, and communal services for Linz and 116 other municipalities in Upper Austria, has partnered with the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) to develop a new TransFER system for waste management. The system, designed in accordance with the Waste Management Act, has been in operation since the beginning of the year and transports an additional 7,500 tonnes of municipal waste from Graz to Linz annually using MOBILER logistics.

The multimodal end-to-end logistics solution was designed by RCG to meet diverse customer needs, with a new type of trestle developed specifically for this TransFER system. MOBILER trucks place empty containers on the trestle, which are then filled. Once full, the containers are collected by the trucks and transported to Graz Ost station, where they are transferred to RCG train wagons, which continue to Linz. This sustainable logistics solution eliminates 315 truck journeys per year assuming 23 tonnes are transported in each truck.
MOBILER logistics combines the environmental benefits of rail transport with the flexibility of road freight transport. A hydraulic lifting device on MOBILER vehicles allows for efficient handling of containers between trucks and wagons without requiring a crane or industrial sidings.

The new Austrian Waste Management Act (AWG) stipulates that, as of January 1, 2023, waste loads exceeding 10 tonnes must be transported by rail if the distance is over 300 km. This requirement will be reduced to 200 km from January 1, 2024, and 100 km from January 1, 2026. In total, approximately 15 million tonnes of waste could be transported by rail in Austria.
