This year's first sugar beet train of Rail Cargo Hungaria arrived at the factory of Magyar Cukor Zrt. in Kaposvár, marking the beginning of the sugar beet campaign 2022.

By the end of December, Rail Cargo Hungaria plans to transport 250 thousand tonnes of sugar beet to Hungary's only sugar factory via train, while the remaining 40% will be transported on road.

This year, the sugar beet harvest in Hungary has been affected by lower yields due to the drought. Hungarian farmers sowed 8.7 thousand hectares of sugar beets, which is less than the previous year. To supplement the local harvest, the sugar factory has been procuring raw materials from sugar beet fields in Slovakia. The factory has planned to process an average of 4500-5000 tonnes of sugar beet per day during the campaign, which requires significant amounts of raw materials to be transported.

Magyar Cukor has assigned Rail Cargo Hungaria the internal railway operations due to the efficient technical cooperation with the sugar beet factory, along with the decades of experience the rail company has in transporting Hungarian sugar beet by rail. During the planned 90-day campaign, Rail Cargo Hungaria is expected to cover more than 100,000 kilometers, with an average of three sugar beet trains running on the rail network per day. The rail freight industry has encountered a huge challenge, with high energy prices causing a drastic reduction in competitiveness compared to road traffic. However, Rail Cargo Hungaria overcomes these difficulties with high-quality organizational logistics approaches to successfully fulfill its transport tasks.
