OBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) transports 80,000 tonnes of coking coal via a new route. Coal deliveries from Australia were reloaded in the port of Koper, from there it traveled by rail to the steelworks in Ostrava, Czech republic.
It took one month and four days in total to reach the port of Koper from Australia. The ship MV Iconic Pride was loaded with 80 000 tonnes of coal. Final transport was done by several RCG trains to the steelworks in Ostrava. The inventive solution was realized within only 48 hours on a sustainable rail. The alternative route was implemented to help overcrowded Baltic ports. RCG holds great hope for the future use of this new route, especially for the transport of raw material.
Black coal helps the Ostrava region, it is in short supply due to the decline in mining. The smelters there are dependent on coal and have to import it from abroad. The coal is usually transshipped at the port of Rotterdam, from where it travels either by rail or by boat on the Elbe to the Czech Republic.
